MFL Curriculum at Mengham Junior School

Mengham Junior School, we strive to develop an interest in language and how it can be used to communicate. The children learn to become language detectives and generate a love for learning new words, using them to share ideas and opinions. By learning languages in Key Stage 2, we hope to form a strong foundation for learning further languages and inspire children to study and work in other countries.

Our language curriculum has been developed by our MFL lead who speaks French to a high standard.  Resources are used to deliver lessons in French as much as possible and children are encouraged to communicate in French. The children learn to understand and respond to spoken and written language from different sources, including through games and songs.  They learn to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity as well as to ask and answer questions.   They write for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.  They are given opportunities to learn about other cultural experiences and to compare them with their own.

The children become successful learners through listening, repeating and applying what they have learnt.  They develop mastery through their understanding that words can be combined to create meaning and can be adapted to suit different contexts.  Understanding that language and culture can be different to your own, leads to tolerance and acceptance for others and therefore children learn to be a responsible member of the community.
