Supporting Teaching and Learning
At Mengham Junior School, we recognise that some children may need additional support in school. This can range from short-term support for a specific emotional or social issue that the child is experiencing, through to longer-term learning support.
We are extremely well equipped to support a wide range of children's needs. The school has a nationally qualified Special Needs Co-ordinator and a team of Teaching Assistants (TAs). The school's Special Needs Co-ordinator (Miss Slade) is responsible for managing the provision that is in place across the school and helps teachers to make sure the needs of all of our children are met. Our Teaching Assistants work with children in class so they are fully able to access the curriculum and also provide additional 1:1 and small group support for children where this is appropriate.
Mrs Lunnon is our Home School Link Worker and is a fully trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) and a FEIPS practitioner. She works with children experiencing emotional or social problems either in or out of school in lots of different ways, ranging from group social skills work through to support for children who have suffered loss or bereavement. In addition, Mrs Roffey is qualified to run a nurture group in our "Tree House" room. We always seek permission from parents before commencing such work.
Mrs Lunnon also works with parents creating strong links between home and school. She is also qualified to lead the "Triple P" (Positive Parenting Program) course.
