Home Learning Policy

Home Learning

At Mengham Junior School we believe that home learning should:
  • Extend and support children’s learning by challenging them at their particular level of ability.
  • Where possible, provide children with choices, through which they can follow and express their particular interests and make use of their preferred learning styles.
  • Promote independence by encouraging children to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Be rewarded through the giving of prompt and constructive feedback and the recognition of good work and effort.
  • As far as possible, be manageable and enjoyable for children, parents and staff.
  • Help children to adopt a positive and resilient attitude to learning that will stay with them throughout their lives.
  • Be valued and supported by children, parents and school staff as a means of strengthening links and communication between home and school.
  • Encourage children and parents to take advantage of opportunities for extended learning, both within school and within the community.
At present, creative homework tasks are set in the form of projects once each half term and are rewarded with either House Points or a prize.
English homework is set each week and consists of:
  • Reading independently or with an adult 3-4 days.
  • Undertaking the bookmark bingo challenge with the opportunity to choose a free book on completion.
  • Completing word study learning (spellings).
Maths homework is set each week and consists of:
  • Learning the times tables needed to earn their next tables certificate.
  • Completing the maths challenge.
Our homework timetables are on each year group pages on our web site but below is a suggested timetable which gives a total of approximately 20 minutes homework each night:
4 lots of reading including the Bookmark challenge (approx. 15 minutes)
Maths challenge (approx. 15 minutes)
3 lots of word study and 2 lots of x tables (approx. 5 minutes each).

In addition, extended learning projects have activities with guidelines for completion dates.
